Sicily is a stunningly beautiful island in the Mediterranean, and the eastern part is a particularly good place to visit. Here you can experience active volcanoes, Baroque cities, sandy beaches and ancient ruins while sampling some of the area’s best food and wine.
Taormina
If you’ve booked vacation rentals in Sicily, you’ll most likely spend some time in Taormina. This is a popular tourist town where you can see quaint piazzas, take in breathtaking views, and pick up a few souvenirs.
Mount Etna
Sicily has four UNESCO World Heritage Sites, and the active volcano of Mount Etna is one of the best known of these sites. It is said to have been erupting for half a million years, which has led to a truly different landscape here than you’ll find in other parts of the island. You can take a tour of the volcano to discover more about the area and the wildlife that lives and grows here.
Avola
If you want to get away from the busy tourist hotspots, Avola is the best place to go. It has one of the most glorious beaches on the island. Piazza Umberto I comes to life at night, when locals emerge for something to eat.
Ragusa
This Baroque town is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Following an earthquake in the late 17th century, this and a few other towns in the area were rebuilt in the beautiful Baroque style. The old town, Ibla, provides you with some of the best views that Sicily has to offer.
