The Portuguese town of Porto is a heavenly place for those who enjoy delicious and different foods and drinks. There are many local delicacies to try, and if you’ve booked one of the town’s luxury rentals, be sure to spend time sampling some of them.
An unforgettable sandwich
When you’re feeling particularly hungry, the francesinha sandwich will satisfy your appetite. This is a large toastie that is filled with sausage, steak and smoked ham, topped with melted cheese, and then covered in a beer-based gravy. It’s available in many of the local restaurants and cafes; at Bufete Fase, it’s the only item they serve.
Have a tipple of port
You can’t visit this part of the world without having one or two glasses of the local port. Within the Vila Nova de Gaia district, you’ll find many port wine cellars that offer tours and tastings for a small price. Port falls into six different types, each of which has been aged for a different amount of time: vintage, late bottled vintage, tawny, colheita, white and rose.
A sweet finish
For those tourists with a sweet tooth, Porto has plenty to give you a sugar fix. If you’re a cake lover, Miss Pavlova has some deserts that are picture perfect in addition to delicious. When only ice cream will do, you need to taste some of the homemade flavors available at La Copa, an ice-cream parlor with a sunny terrace where you can watch the world go by.
