Lanzarote is situated in the Canary Islands just off the west coast of North Africa. The climate makes it an ideal destination for a winter break, and the attractions provide you with a closer view of the unique landscape of this beautiful island.
César Manrique
Unlike many other Spanish islands, Lanzarote has not seen extensive overdevelopment. The main resorts have been kept fairly low key, with small holiday apartments instead of high-rise buildings. This was largely due to the vision of César Manrique, an environmentalist, architect and artist. Some of the main attractions are related to his work and ideas, including his home, which is built into a lava field.
The volcano
The volcano on Lanzarote is the island’s main feature, and it is surrounded by a vast black wilderness. You can connect with a bus tour to view the amazing rock formations close up. In the summit restaurant, you can even eat fish and meat that has been cooked using heat from the volcano.
Teguise
This town was the original capital of the island. The 15th-century surroundings provide you with a beautiful town to wander around, with pretty colonial mansions, small cafes and intricate churches. If you visit on a Sunday, you’ll find a busy and vibrant market where you can pick up a bargain.
The beaches
Even in the winter months, the beaches of Lanzarote provide the perfect place to relax and soak up the sun or participate in some of the many water sports.
