Hannover, Germany, is a beautiful city to visit during the winter months. It is often ignored as a European city break destination, but it has plenty of exciting things you can pack into your weekend there.
The airport is well served by flights from around the globe and is only ten kilometers outside of the city. From there, you can catch a train to the city center or grab a taxi straight to one of the many vacation rentals.
Walk the city
A fantastic and cheap way to view the city is to walk the Red Thread, which covers a 4.2-kilometer route that is clearly marked on the pavement. It will take you past many of the city’s sites, including the Opera House and the ruins of a 14th-century church that was bombed during the Second World War.
Go shopping
The flea market on Leibnizufer is one of the oldest in Europe. It opens from 9:00am through 3:00pm every Saturday and has a variety of interesting stalls to browse.
Take a tram ride
If you hop on tram 4 or 5, it will take you northeast out of the city. These routes provide views of some of Hannover’s best scenery. You can alight at the Herrenhäuser Gärten and take a walk through the stunning gardens there.
Check out Hannover’s museums
If you want to finish your weekend with some culture, the city has some superb museums that are worth visiting. This includes the Deutsches Museum für Karikatur und Zeichenkunst, which is dedicated to the man who created cartoon strips.
