Morocco has lots to offer the adventurous tourist, but many visitors can be put off by the worries they have over safety. If you’re planning to wander the medinas in Marrakech while staying in one of the city’s cheap apartments, how can you enjoy yourself and still stay safe?
Stay in groups at night
The busier and more well-lit areas of the city should be fine, but it’s still best to stay in groups after dark. Petty crime can be a problem if you’re not careful.
Don’t be a solo woman
Men in Morocco can give women by themselves attention that they don’t necessarily want. This is more manageable if you’re in a larger group, and it will seem less intimidating if you’re not alone.
Dress appropriately
As a Muslim country, Morocco has a conservative dress policy. Tourists are expected to follow this in order to avoid causing offense. It’s best to keep your legs, shoulders and arms covered, and you shouldn’t wear anything skimpy.
Keep valuables hidden
When you’re away from your accommodation, you should only take out the minimum amount of cash you need and leave the rest of it safely behind in your hotel or apartment. Keep any valuables hidden, and never take your passport with you when you’re going out around the city.
Don’t go with tour guides
The tour guides will try to entice tourists by saying that they don’t need to pay for their services. However, they will get you to pay in some way, such as by directing you to certain shops.
